Hughes Backstops Sting To Shootout Win

Goaltender Aidan Hughes posted his first win of the season and Nikita Korostelev scored the deciding goal in a 4-3 shootout win in Kingston Friday night.

The win snapped a five game winless skid that started November 12 when the Frontenacs beat the Sting in Sarnia.

Rookie Sean Josling had scored the potential winning goal with four minutes left in regulation but the Sting took two penalties with just over a minute remaining, the second a bench minor, allowing Kingston to tie the game with 36 seconds left.

Despite power play opportunities for both teams in the overtime period, there was no scoring.

Korostelev, the Sting's leading goal scorer with 15, was the only player to find the back of the net in the shootout on a nice deke on Jeremy Helvig. Hughes, in just his fifth start of the season, stopped all three Frontenac shooters.

The Sting led 2-0 after the first period on goals by rookie Brady Hinz and Troy Lajeunesse. Kingston converted on a two man advantage in the second, making the score 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Sarnia was outshot 41-36.

Lajeunesse had a two point night and was named the game's second star.

The Sting (13-9-3) is right back in action in Ottawa Saturday afternoon at 2pm.
