The Sarnia Legionnaires (16-9-0-0) edged the St. Marys Lincolns (7-15-0-1) 5-4 in double overtime in a penalty-filled game at the Brock St. Barn Thursday.
Jake Vince and Justin VanBuskirk led the way for the Legionnaires with a goal and an assist each.
Sarnia led 2-1 midway through the second period before Ethan Dupont was handed a five minute fighting major along with two minutes for instigating and two minutes for being the aggressor. St. Marys scored just once on the ensuing nine minute powerplay to tie the game 2-2 heading into the third frame.
Hunter Tyczynski scored on the powerplay and VanBuskirk notched a shorthanded marker to put the Legionnaires up 4-2 just 4:30 into the third. Sarnia ran into penalty trouble again however, as Tanner Hertel scored two goals with the man advantage to tie the game 4-4 and send it to overtime.
After a scoreless four on four overtime, Alec DeKoning won the game for the Legionnaires on a break away goal three on three. Zach Vanderwal scored Sarnia's other goal.
Legionnaires goalie Jorgen Johnson stopped 40 of 44 shots while Tristan Lewis made 33 saves on 38 shots in the Lincolns crease.
In all, Sarnia went 1/6 on the powerplay and allowed three goals on nine times shorthanded.
The win gives the Legionnaires 32 points on the season, good for third place in the GOJHL's Western Conference. They're seven points back of the first place LaSalle Vipers and three behind the London Nationals.
Sarnia's next game is Sunday night in Leamington at 5pm.
