It's CO Awareness Week.
Carbon monoxide is called a silent killer because it is a colorless, odourless, and tasteless gas that's slightly less dense than air.
Sarnia Fire Public Education Officer Mike Otis says it's the law to have CO alarms properly installed in our homes.
"We're just trying to get out the importance of having working carbon monoxide alarms," says Otis. "50 people a year die in Canada including 11 in Ontario from carbon monoxide poisoning and thousands are hospitalized every year."
Just last week, Sarnia Fire and Rescue responded to a Wellington St. apartment building due to an odour which led to the discovery of a carbon monoxide leak.
The property owner has been charged with two counts of not having a carbon monoxide alarm provided where required. Two other charges were laid for not having a CO alarm and smoke alarm in operating condition.
A woman is being hailed a hero for making the life saving call to Sarnia fire. There were ten people in the building at the time.
