Special Needs Shopping Gains Momentum With New Cart (GALLERY)

A new, specially designed, shopping cart will help individuals with special needs get around Sarnia's Real Canadian Superstore a bit easier.

The Sarnia Elks Lodge and the grocery store are sharing the $1,400 cost of "Caroline's Cart."

Elks Secretary Treasurer Donna Clendenning says the Elks of Canada encouraged its lodges to work together with stores.

"We're hoping that this will catch on, because it will help families with special needs individuals to enjoy a shopping experience together," say Clendenning.

Store Manager Rob Ware also hopes it will be the first of many in the community.

"Being in this industry for over 20 years I can assure you that there are a lot of people that have disabilities and have accessibility issues that could definitely benefit from this cart," he says.

Kortnee Tully says the new cart will be life changing for her 5-year-old daughter Kassidi who has cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

"She has a hard time walking long distance,"she says. "She does have a walker that she uses, but this cart is awesome. It gives us the opportunity to get out and not have people stop us, because they always stop us when we're using her walker."

As for Kassidi, who plans to be Supergirl for Halloween, she says she likes to push the cart but think's it's fun to ride in too.
