Sarnia fire officials say a citizen is being hailed as a hero for making a life-saving call Wednesday night.
Firefighters were called to an apartment building on Wellington St. near Lansdowne Ave., by a resident who was concerned about a smell. Upon arrival, firefighters were able to quickly detect 400 parts per million of carbon monoxide in the building, which could have been life threatening within three hours.
Fire Prevention Officer Douglas McCurdy says ten people were in the apartment building at the time.
"We're calling one of the residents, Jacklyn Pendleton a hero," says McCurdy. "Her calling 911 essentially saved the lives of ten people in that building."
The property owner has been charged with two counts of not having a carbon monoxide alarm provided where required. Two other charges were laid for not having a CO or smoke alarm in operating condition.
The leak was caused by a malfunctioning appliance in the service room that was running and spewing carbon monoxide throughout the entire building.
