Protecting Lake Huron

Representatives from 14 municipalities along Lake Huron will attend a first of its kind municipal forum in Goderich on Thursday.

Matthew Hoy is Executive Director of Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation, a non-profit organization established in 1998 to protect and restore Lake Huron's coastal environment.

Items to be discussed will include things that affect the shoreline such as phragmites, dune and bluff management and low or high water levels.

"We need to decide how we are going to prepare for global warming which will affect the lake in the future," says Hoy. "Environmental issues are key for our communities, and not just for the well-being of ourselves. We're all tourist communities and if we don't have a healthy lake, we don't survive."

Top scientists and local environmentalists will make presentations in what is hoped to be an annual event.
