First Mammograms Urged As Part Of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Bluewater Health and Cancer Care Ontario are encouraging women, aged 50-54, to schedule an appointment for their first mammogram this month.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Director of Diagnostic imaging Diane Cadieux says mammograms are the best and most reliable way to detect breast cancer early on.

"Breast cancers can be detected through screening mammography when they are small, with a better chance of being treated successfully," says Cadiex. "This is why we are inviting women to start screening sooner rather than later as early detection is key."

She says a special event is planned for first time participants on Friday, October 28.

"We make it a really fun day at the hospital. We all dress in pink. We have special cupcakes for the patients that come and we have giveaways."

The average mammogram takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

Cadieux says this is the second annual 'Just Book It' event, which saw 42 first time participants last year.

No referral from a doctor is required. To book an appointment call 519-464-4515.
