U.S. Navy Ship Sails By On Way To Commissioning

Sarnians gathered along the riverfront Friday morning to watch the passage of the USS Detroit. The $440-million vessel was headed to the Motor City for a week of activities leading up to its formal commissioning. As many as 4,000 people are expected to attend a ceremony October 22 outside the GM Renaissance Centre. Once commissioned, the 378-ft, 3,500 ton monohull combat ship will spend four days in Windsor beginning October 24. It will eventually join the U.S. Pacific fleet based in San Diego but is expected to be forward deployed out of Singapore.
