Legionnaires Down Rockets For Second Straight Week

The Sarnia Legionnaires picked up another comeback victory Thursday night with a hard fought 4-2 win over the Strathroy Rockets in GOJHL hockey play.

Sarnia was trailing 2-0 midway through the second period before Joey Zappa buried his second goal of the season. The powerplay marker was assisted by Sam McCormack and Eric Marsh.

Jarret Marks and Ethan Dupont each scored third period goals, and Justin Vanbuskirk sealed the game with an empty netter with 1:20 remaining.

Legionnaires Assistant Coach Derek Demuzio says the team got better and better as the game went on.

"I thought we were a little sluggish in the first period and then we found our legs," says Demuzio. "We really executed our game plan, and that's the thing I'm most proud of. You can see our game is really taking shape and we really took it to them in the second and third."

The Legionnaires out-shot Strathroy 42-35 and each team scored once on five powerplay chances.

It's the Legionnaires second win against the Rockets this season. They downed them 5-4 in overtime September 29 after trailing 4-1 in the second frame.

The win moves the Legionnaires to 6-4-0-0 on the season, while the Rockets are 4-3-1-1. Sarnia's 12 points have them tied for first place in the Western Conference standings with London and LaSalle.

The Legionnaires return to action October 13 at home to the Chatham Maroons.
