City Fire Issues Warning About Unattended Cooking

Sarnia fire officials are urging residents to be more vigilant and safety conscious when they're cooking.

Firefighters responded at 3:37am Saturday to the 300 block of Brock St. S.

Three tenants had escaped through smoke from a second floor apartment after fire broke out in the kitchen as a result of unattended cooking.

The fire was quickly put out and was confined to the kitchen area with damage estimated at $30,000.

Fire officials say unattended cooking is the leading source of ignition in home fires and the second leading source in fatal fires.

It's recommended residents stay in the kitchen when cooking especially if oil is being used at high temperatures, combustible items like utensils and paper towels be kept a safe distance away and a proper fitting lid be kept handy near the stove in the event a pot catches fire.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of a fire late Friday night in the 100 block of East St.

A fence was ablaze with the flames engulfing a lean-to shed, filling an attached commercial building with smoke.

Damage is pegged at $25,000.
