Despite matching St. Thomas with 30 shots on goal, the Sarnia Legionnaires dropped their home opener 3-0 in GOJHL hockey action Thursday.

The Stars broke the scoreless tie with just 12 seconds remaining in the second frame on Tim Fallowfield's first career goal.

Stars forward Issac McLean scored four minutes into the third, and Ethan Norther capped the win with an empty net goal. Ray Robbins dished out a pair of helpers.

Legionnaires first year goalie Jorgen Johnson was stellar, making 27 saves including some acrobatic stops. St. Thomas netminder Dan Black made 30 saves for the shutout.

Legionnaires Captain Hunter Tyczynski says the team played well despite the loss.

"I think we outworked them for our third game together. There's a lot of young guys, a lot of new faces out here and I think everyone was working hard and we just didn't get bounces," he says. "A lot of us, including myself, need to learn that if we're getting that many shots and not scoring then we need to go to the net more."

Legionnaires Head Coach Mark Davis says there are a few things to work on, but overall it was a good effort.

"We've got practice on Saturday so we'll work on our power play and we've just got to work on the little things," says Davis. "I thought our forecheck was good, our neutral zone forecheck was good. We just have to work on getting guys in front of the net and try to bury it."

The Legionnaires killed all six of their penalties but were held scoreless on three power plays.

The loss moves the Legionnaires to 1-2-0-0 on the season, while St. Thomas is a perfect 3-0-0-0.

The Legionnaires' next game is Sunday night in Chatham.
