School Buses Return To The Road

As we enter another school year, Sarnia police are reminding parents and students to stay safe.

Constable John Sottosanti says everyone should be reminded of the rules of the road.

He says the traffic unit receives several complaints a week of motorists ignoring the school bus stop arm.

"Knock on wood we fortunately haven't had, in the years that I have been an officer, a lot of incidents where individuals have been hurt but we have had some close calls," says Sottosanti.

"If you're behind a bus, there's a good chance that bus is going to stop and if you're in a rush maybe turn off and find another route."

Failure to stop for a bus with its stop arm out and lights flashing can result in a $490 fine and six demerit points for a first offence.

There are high resolution stop arm cameras installed on Lambton-Kent school bus fleets to help convict drivers who fail to stop when the vehicles are picking up or dropping off children.

Motorists are also reminded to slow down in school zones.
