Macleans Tallies Float Down Cost

Macleans Magazine has put a price tag on the Port Huron Float Down August 21.

Macleans says when you factor everything in, including a $225,000 U.S. Coast Guard tab, the total comes to about $280,000. The Chamber of Shipping says there were eight freighters waiting to pass through the St. Clair River while the channel was shut down from noon until 8pm, costing $10,000 each, and that amount isn't even factored into the equation The US Coast Guard had 30 personnel on scene, four boats, a helicopter with two pilots on emergency standby, while the Canadian Coast Guard wracked up over $21,000 in expenses. Sarnia, of course, is out over $8,000 for Police, Fire and Rescue, and Sarnia Transit bus service to take about 1,500 people back to Port Huron
