Rising OPP Costs On The Agenda

Rising policing costs for municipalities in which wind turbines are located will be the prime topic of discussion when Lambton County's Warden meets with government officials at this week's Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) meetings in Windsor. (Sun. Aug 14-Aug 17)

Bev MacDougall says they were originally told that host municipalities would see no material increase in the OPP costing model. Instead some municipalities have seen their costs rise by 20 to 30%.

"What we want to do is go back and talk to the Ministry of Safety & Correctional Services about the way the model was developed," she says. The current billing model treats industrial turbines like commercial properties."

Plympton-Wyoming's OPP policing bill only rose by $5,000 this year compared to last while Warwick's cost is down by $50,000 year-over-year.
