Plans For Bluewater International Granfondo In 2017

Bluewater International Granfondo organizers have started talking about next year.

Over $30,000 was raised for St. Joseph's Hospice and Palliative Care at Bluewater Health by the major cycling event this year.

Chair Ken MacAlpine calls it an overwhelming success and says the committee is hoping to host the event again in 2017.

"We have agreed in principle to go ahead with next year and are tentatively looking at the same long weekend in August," says MacAlpine.

"We cut the registration off this year at 500 and next year we think we'll go to 750, which we anticipate being able to fill, not easily, but we certainly feel 750 is a reasonable number to expect in the area for next year. That would start to make it one of the bigger events in Ontario from a cycling perspective."

While most of the riders were local, MacAlpine says they did have about 150 participants from other areas including BC, Quebec, and across the US.

The July 31 event featured 50 km, 100 km, and 150 km races.
