Fire Officials Urge Smokers To Butt Out Safely

Sarnia Fire and Rescue is stressing the importance of properly disposing of lit cigarette butts.

Fire Life Safety Educator Mike Otis says the message is especially important in this summer's dry conditions.

"The best option would be a heavy metal container with sand in it and make sure they're fully extinguished," says Otis. "Another point is never flick them anywhere, especially in peat moss or dry mulch, that's the cause of a lot of fires."

Otis says careless smoking is the leading cause of fatal fires.

It was cited as the cause of an $80,000 blaze Tuesday afternoon that extensively damaged the rear of a Cameron St. home.

Thankfully no one was injured.
