Sarnia police are warning the public about an immigration scam.
Police were called after a resident was contacted by phone by someone claiming to represent the "Canadian Immigration Centre."
The caller told the individual his Canadian citizen status was unconfirmed and that he should either contact the RCMP to have the matter investigated or forward a payment to the CIC and speak to a supervisor to clear up the situation immediately.
Police says the resident didn't fall for the scam because the caller had no idea where he was from or born.
Also, police say CIC stands for Canadian Immigration and Citizenship, not the Canadian Immigration Centre.
Residents are reminded not to share personal information over the telephone or internet and verify any immigration concerns by calling the actual agencies. Do not use the phone numbers given by the suspect.
