Dab For Deker

Sarnia's first ever Fundraiser Day Charity Bingo will support the Deker Bauer Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Jackpot City on Upper Canada Drive is hosting the event this Sunday in conjunction with the Mayor's Community Fund and the Sarnia Country Charitable Association.

Foundation Spokesperson Michelle Parks says $15 vouchers are being sold in advance, which can be redeemed at Sunday's 4pm bingo for a $30 all-in bingo package.

"That whole $15 will go to our foundation. We also have a table auction with over $1,500 worth of donated goods that people can bid on," says Parks.

Vouchers are available at The Drawbridge Inn in Sarnia, Gray's Flowers in Petrolia and any board member with the Deker Bauer Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Board members can be contacted through the groups Facebook page here or website here.

Parks says the local non-profit organization is very close to securing a location for its drop-in centre that will provide round-the-clock assistance to those contemplating suicide.

"We haven't signed a formal agreement yet, so that will be our next announcement," she says. "But, we are very close so now we are working towards getting the funding and sponsorships to make that happen."

Lambton County Council approved a $20,000 grant last March to support start up costs for the drop-in centre.

Deker Bauer, 17, was taken to hospital in June 2014 following a panic attack and told there was an eight month wait to see a child and youth psychiatrist.

He committed suicide in August of that year.
