Tall Ships Plying Area Waters This Week

A replica of a Viking warship from the Norse era is scheduled to sail up the St. Clair River sometime this week.

The Dragon Harald Fairhair (Norwegian: Draken Harald Hårfagre) left Norway April 26, retracing the first trans-Atlantic crossing and the Viking's discovery of the New World.

It's 35 m long, has an 8 m beam, is built of oak and carries 260 sq m or 2,800 sq ft of sail.

It has 50 oars, each powered by two men and requires a crew of 30 under sail.

At last report the Dragon Harald Fairhair was still docked in Ohio and is not expected to arrive in the Sarnia area until sometime Tuesday afternoon at the earliest.

It's heading to a Tall Ships festival that begins in Bay City, Michigan Friday.

In fact a number of Tall Ships will be plying area waters early this week on the way to the festival including an impressive 170 ft Spanish Galleon.

There's a fleet tracker on the Tall Ships America website, but because of wind and weather it's difficult to determine exactly when the vessels will pass through the area.
