Sarnia-Lambton MP Opposes Anthem Change

Proposed changes to the Canadian national anthem aren't sitting well with Sarnia-Lambton Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu.

Bill C-210, introduced by dying MP Mauril Belanger, passed by a vote of 225-74 in the House of Commons last week.

It aims to change the line "in all our sons command" to "in all of us command" in an attempt to be more gender neutral.

Gladu says she voted against the bill after consulting with local constituents.

"Overwhelmingly, they were saying 'well you know what, this is our national anthem we think it's an historic anthem and we want to keep it the way it is'," says Gladu.

"Personally, the two words they're changing I don't see as a big deal. But, I understand why people are concerned. They're concerned about what's next and they want to preserve Canadian heritage."

Gladu doesn't see the anthem as being sexist, saying "changing it won't solve the gender problems that exist."

She also questions the democratic process of passing the bill. She says it was brought to committee, one witness was taken, they shutdown debate, voted out of order, and accellerated it through the house.

The bill is now in the hands of the Senate and could still be overturned.
