Local Teen Delivers 'Big Serve' To City Council

A Petrolia teen has delivered a "big serve" in gaining momentum for an indoor tennis facility in Sarnia-Lambton. In his presentation Monday, Matt Mueller told city council he was looking for support, not asking for money. "All I'm asking from council is to get excited about this with me, because if I don't have your support its not going to work," said Mueller. Mueller has submitted different preliminary proposals, but says he isn't asking for specifics. He says he just wants backing to do his piece of the puzzle and fundraise . "I believe that all of the funds will come in for this project, because tennis is well supported. I don't want the city or the tennis club to have to pay anything, because i believe all of the money will come in." Mueller asked for assistance in supplying contacts, applying for grants and building a website. Councillor Brian White says he can visualize everything Mueller was talking about. "I honestly believe that if this vision comes true, that we will be introducing a new concept and new opportunity for not only our seniors but for the youth in this community." Council has directed staff to work with Mueller and investigate further the feasibility of developing an indoor tennis facility at sites like Brentwood Park, off Rosedale Avenue, or the former Dow Recreation Centre off Modeland Road. Mueller was honoured for his leadership by Ontario's Lieutenant Governor this past March..

He raised nearly $25,000 to refurbish the Mary Beach Tennis Courts in Petrolia.

Mueller's fundraising for that project included a significant donation from Canada's number 1 tennis star Milos Raonic.
