City Council has given the green light for phase 2 and 3 Centennial Park remediation.
Council awarded the over $7-million dollar contract, which includes the Harbour Road/Centennial Park Watermain Project, to Bre-Ex Construction Inc. of London Monday.
Councillor Dave Boushy voted against the motion.
"I'm frustrated the cost is going up and up," said Boushy.
"I'm not a person to tell you "I told you so", but you know what? I told you so."
Councillor Mike Kelch expressed offense to that.
"4 years ago, no one in this room knew the scope of the problem," said Kelch.
"In the ensuing 4 years, we have discovered the problem is a large problem and it's our number one job to make that park safe. We're working with all of the people that we need to work with, including the province, to guarantee to our taxpayers that the park will be safe for everybody and we will do whatever it takes to get there."
The next phases, planned to begin the first week of July, aren't expected to be complete until November.
This will be the fourth consecutive summer that much of the park is closed off following the discovery of asbestos and other contaminants in May 2013.
