City To Remove Footsteps Tribute to Courage Walkway

There was a small, but moving ceremony along Sarnia's waterfront Tuesday morning.

Members of the Sexual Assault Survivors Centre, survivors of childhood sexual abuse and Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley gathered on the Footsteps Tribute to Courage Walkway, near the Centennial Park boat ramp.

The walkway has to be dismantled as the next phases of park remediation are completed.

Executive Director Michelle Batty recognized hard work that went into the project and the impact the walkway has had on the community and survivors.

"We wanted to have a hope and healing, moving forward ceremony, before the attempt to remove and move the stones to another location in the park," said Batty.

Batty described the stone removal as a blessing in disguise.

She says hopefully most of the stones can be removed intact and repairs will be made to those that have cracked before they are placed in a new healing garden in the park.

The project involved 63 survivors who prepared artwork and messages that were transferred to the stones.
