The Village of Pt. Edward is looking for a new mayor.
After 28 years on village council, and the past three as mayor, Larry MacKenzie has unexpectedly announced his resignation, for personal reasons, effective immediately.
Village CAO Jim Burns says MacKenzie wants to spend more time with family including his young grandchildren.
He says they'll chart a course of action at the next council meeting June 28.
"We have to declare the seat vacant, and then there will be a discussion among council about how to fill the position," says Burns. "There are a few options. We can promote from within, or hold a by-election. It'll be up to council to make that decision."
Deputy Mayor Bev Hand says MacKenzie will be missed.
"Mayor MacKenzie has served the village for 28 years and has been a very positive influence in the community," says Hand. "Larry's contribution to Pt. Edward will be evident for many years and his leadership will be missed."
MacKenzie was first elected to Pt. Edward council in 1988. He became mayor when the late Dick Kirkland resigned in 2013 and was acclaimed the following year in the municipal election.
The four year term runs until the fall of 2018.
