Dead Bird Surveillance Underway

Dead bird surveillance is underway.

It's an effort to track the West Nile virus.

Lambton Public Health Supervisor Lori Lucas says in certain circumstances adult crows and blue jays dead for less then 24 hours may be considered for physical testing.

"We usually don't send off that many birds because a lot of them aren't necessarily suitable for testing. But, it's a good indication for us to be able to just track where the virus is," says Lucas.

Lucas doesn't recommend handling the birds with bare hands.

She says to use gloves to put the birds in a plastic bag, and place it in an outdoor garbage can for disposal.

Residents are asked to report sightings of all dead birds by calling 519-383-3824, toll free at 1-800-667-1839 or online at www.lambtonhealth.on.ca
