Sarnia Slips In City Rankings

The City of Sarnia has room for improvement according to Moneysense Magazine's list of the Best Places to Live in Canada in 2016.

Sarnia placed 144th of 219 communities on the list, down from 135th in 2015.

The city's unemployment rate sits at 8.2% and the magazine says there's poor access to health care (1.6 doctors per 1,000 people), low incomes (average household discretionary income is $47,574), and high taxes (2.65% property tax).

They also say it's tough to access areas by walking, biking or using public transit. Less than 2% of residents use these forms of transportation.

Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce President Shirley de Silva feels the city's ranking should be higher.

"I just couldn't disagree more with the ranking," says de Silva.

"In terms of affordability of housing, quality of life, friendly people, small-town feel, great business potential, low crime rate, great location, super weather, proximity to the boarder, and beaches and blue waters."

The crime rate in Sarnia has declined by nearly 10% over the past five years but the crime severity index is just over 113, higher than the Canadian standard of 100 set in 2006.

The rankings consider things like taxes, affordable housing, average income, crime rates, arts, sports, weather, and transit.

Ottawa is ranked first on the list while Burlington came in second.

The last three cities on the list are in Nova Scotia.
