Sarnia drivers just can't seem to put their cell phones down.
City police conducted a "distracted driving blitz" Thursday.
Constable Nelson Amaral says in just under six hours, officers issued 31 tickets under the Highway Traffic act, 28 for drive with a hand held communication device.
He says off the 28 offenders, 15 were male and 13 female.
Amaral says just because your vehicle isn't moving, doesn't mean you can use your phone.
"Quite frequently that was the misconception actually, simply having your cell phone in hand or accessing it at a red light or stop sign carries the same penalty," says Amaral. "We would like to remind drivers most importantly just to put your phones away when you're behind the wheel and communication in a vehicle while driving must be hands free."
The offence carries a fine of $490 and a loss of three demerit points.
