If residents are thinking of enjoying a bonfire this long holiday weekend, Sarnia Fire and Rescue wants to ensure the proper precautions are followed.
Public Education Officer Mike Otis says there are rules to remember for open burning.
"It has to be conducted between the hours of 10am and 11pm, it has to be in a pit no larger than two-by-two feet in size and no more than 8" above grade," he says. "The pit must be covered by a heavy metal gauge screen to preclude the escape of combustible ash," he says.
"We do get a ton of open burning calls, not even just in the summer."
Otis says if those having bonfires must also have a means to extinguish the fire or a garden hose on hand.
Residents found disobeying the by-law may face a fine under the Provincial Offences Act
