A local cider company is being recognized internationally for six of its products.
Thedford's Twin Pines Orchard and Cider House recently captured two gold and four bronze medals at the Great Lakes International Cider competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The companies, Hammer Bent Original and Hammer Bent Red, each placed first in the new world cider modern category.
Co-Owner Mark Vansteenkiste says it's a big accomplishment. There were over 1,000 ciders entered into the competition.
"We're one of the few cideries in Ontario that actually does everything ourselves on site from the growing to pressing, fermenting, carbonating and bottling," says Vansteenkiste. "We're a little more in tune with the apples than some places and that gives us a little better ability to bring some of the characteristics of the apples through to the ciders."
Vansteenkiste says Twin Pines' cider is becoming increasingly popular and is being sold at Refined Fool, and bars across the region.
He says they've entered into the cider portion of the Canadian Craft Brewing awards and hope to take home more hardware.
