Local Students Raise $1,200 For Fort McMurray

Students at Sarnia's Hanna Memorial Public School were raising funds for Fort McMurray in a refreshing way Friday afternoon.

Boys and girls in Grade 8 were holding up colourful signs and selling lemonade on Maria St. to help support those displaced by the wildfires.

Student Ashley Subinski says they wanted to get involved after following news stories in their classrooms.

"We were just thinking of what would happen if that was us and so we wanted to help," she says, adding that she's overwhelmed by the amount of support from the community.

"I wasn't expecting that many people to come together, but I'm really proud of our city for that."

Ashley's teacher Mrs. Mitchell says by 1pm, students had already raised about $800.

"It's been amazing! Lots of people are just coming up and giving the donations, not even taking the lemonade, even though its delicious," she laughs.

Mitchell later confirmed the event raised a total of $1,200.

Students from Grades 4 to 7 also helped organize and create signs for the fundraiser.
