Council Rejects RiverWalk Study

A local architect hopes his proposal for a RiverWalk on Sarnia's waterfront has not yet reached a dead end.

Sarnia City Council defeated a motion Monday to complete a low-level feasibility study of David Lavender's design plans, with councillors Scholten, MacDougall, Mitro and Gillis voting against.

Among council's concerns was the availability of staff resources and funding opportunities, as well as the possibility of support from senior governments.

Lavender hoped council had done more research to see that government funding opportunities are possible.

Despite council's lack of support, Lavender believes this is not the end for the project.

"I see Sarnia as a place where if people want something to happen, it will happen and I think that's where it stands now," says Lavender.

RiverWalk 24/7/365 is a proposed 200m boardwalk and pavilion extending into the St. Clair River from the point lands.

Lavender says he's invested 40 hours and about $1,000 of his own time and money into the proposal.
