Bluewater Health Finalizes 12 Job Cuts

Bluewater Health has had one involuntary layoff since previously announcing 12 net positions would be cut.

At the hospital's board meeting in Petrolia Wednesday, President and CEO Mike Lapaine confirmed the other 11 individuals took alternate paths.

He says seven people took retirement packages, three chose to resign or retire, and one accepted a layoff with a severance package.

The hospital continues to battle a forecasted budget deficit of $1.3-million for the 2015/16 fiscal year, with updated numbers including February.

"We've had some expense improvement in the last two months and a little bit of extra revenue that we didn't expect," he says.

Lapaine says it had been reduced from $1.8-million the month before due to additional ministry funding and an improvement in salaries expenses.

"[Wages] do go up and down. One aspect is you might have a lot of people taking vacation in March," he says. "We see the same phenomenon in July and August where people tend to take more vacation. Wages tend to be lower."

Numbers for the end of February show the hospital is still over budget by $515,000 for salaries and $516,000 for benefits.

Final numbers for the fiscal year, ending March 31, are expected to be released next month.
