The Ontario Liberal government is being pressed to be more transparent when it comes to spending.
Lambton-Kent-Middlesex Conservative MPP Monte McNaughton is calling on the government to release the names of businesses it provides grants to.
McNaughton says the Liberals have given out $5-billion per year to Ontario companies since Kathleen Wynne took over as leader.
He says taxpayers have the right to know where their money is being spent.
"The alarm bells were raised once again on this issue back in in November last year when the Auditor General came out and said a lot of this money was being handed out to established companies that, quite frankly, didn't need the money," says McNaughton. "She said about 80% of the money was handed out through an invitation only process."
McNaughton says the Ontario government isn't in a position to give away money because the province is $308-billion in debt.
He feels the money handed out to companies should instead be put toward balancing the budget and reducing taxes.
He says he's written numerous letters to the government but hasn't heard a response.
