It's a first for Sarnia Arena, ice in April.
Typically, crews remove the ice at the conclusion of the Junior B season.
Manager of Arenas for the City of Sarnia Rob Harwood says they kept the ice in longer because of the closure of Germain Arena.
He doesn't foresee any issues after they added a new desiccant dehumidifiers.
"It's easier for us to offer ice at this time of the year since we put in a desiccant air dehumidification system a few years ago, that helps control the humidity issues and the load that's put on it from the warm outside weather, " says Harwood.
Harwood says it's the latest they've had ice since the facility was built in 1948.
They'll remove the ice in late June, and have it back in time for the start of the Sarnia Legionnaires season.
He says they are able to complete scheduled maintenance work once the ice is removed through the summer months.
