Lambton Public Health is working to eliminate healthcare barriers for the LGBTQ community.
The Bridging the Gap project aims to identify gaps in services and provide the education and resources needed between community partners.
Health Promotion Manager Kevin Churchill says it's about treating everyone in need of service with dignity.
"It's 2016 and I think every agency and service provider probably has room for improvement in terms of how they serve the LGBTQ community," he says.
The project, set to begin in May, engages local health partners including hospitals, physician offices, and community clinics.
Some of the partners include Rebound, St. Clair Child and Youth, Lambton Mental Wellness Centre, and Lambton Community Health Centres.
"We hope that healthcare providers will have a better understanding of LGBTQ needs and how to improve access and create safe environments," says Churchill.
The Bridging the Gap project was recently awarded full funding of $15,000 by Rainbow Health Ontario.
