Sarnia council will consider closing Jackson Pool, at least temporarily this summer, when it meets Monday.
A city staff report says the 44 ft by 82 ft in-ground pool, built in 1966, is in need of improvements that could cost upwards of $167,000.
Mayor Mike Bradley has concerns, saying it's important to renew such facilities.
"My hope would be we move forward, and anytime, you take away something like a pool or other facilities you diminish the community so you need to have a strategy," says Bradley. "Yes, the demographics are changing but at the same time do we need to close that pool permanently. It would be my hope we look at other strategies. It's served this community well since the 1960s."
The staff report says that based on swim course enrolments, Jackson Pool operates at 52% capacity and closing it permanently would save about $69,000 a year.
Recommended improvements include accessibility upgrades, equipment replacement, structure upgrades and liner replacement.
