Rescuers Of Fire Victim Called Heroes

A representative from the Ontario Fire Marshal's office is back on the scene of Wednesday's house fire on Queen St. in Petrolia, that sent the female owner to hospital in London with severe smoke inhalation.

Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Chief Lawrence Swift says damage is estimated around $120,000.

"The fire damage was contained to the living area at the front of the house," says Swift. "There was heavy smoke damage throughout the house and the fire did go up into the attic which made us pull down the roof on the second floor. The damage is extensive."

Chief Swift says by the time they arrived on scene, the owner had been rescued from the home by two neighbours.

"An ex-volunteer firefighter and a member of the public pulled the lady out from a side entrance, at which time fire and EMS arrived on scene and found her there with the two heroic people," he says.

Volunteer firefighters from Wyoming and Oil Springs were called for extra manpower.

Panel siding on a home next door was peeled away by the flames and the neighbours were evacuated as a precaution.

Swift says several cats inside the home were rescued or made it out safely.
