Concerns With Sarnia-Windsor Pipeline

The National Energy Board (NEB) has denied a request from Plains Midstream to increase pressure in a 12" oil pipeline running between Sarnia and Windsor.

In fact, the company is being forced to decrease pressure because some sections of the line aren't buried deep enough.

NEB spokesman Darin Barter says Plain Midstream must file a depth of cover survey, and engineering assessment within 90 days.

"They're also required to correct all of the problem areas where the pipeline isn't buried deep enough or there isn't enough cover over top of it," says Barter. "Within that 90 days, the company has to notify landowners, occupants and users of land along the pipeline path that there could be a potential risk if they operate heavy machinery along that pipeline."

Plains Midstream is also required to conduct daily patrols along the line, and submit quarterly damage prevention results for a year.

Residents with questions about buried pipelines in the community can contact the provincial One Call Centre at 1-800-400-2255.
