The president of Lambton College is thrilled the provincial budget includes relief for post secondary students from low income families.
An upfront grant, called the Ontario Student Grant, will take effect in the 2017-2018 school year, making tuition free for students from families with incomes of $50,000 or less.
Judith Morris says about 50% of Lambton College's students are from families with yearly incomes less than $60,000.
"There are students who are actually pursuing a college education, but there are many more out there that we haven't been able to attract just because they're worried about carrying debt," says Morris. "They don't have access to many loans, and so this will really open doors for those who haven't currently enrolled."
The budget also announced $20-million over three years for college applied research and more funding for aboriginal education.
Morris says the research money will strengthen the local economy and create new job opportunities.
