College Pushing For Changes To Tuition Grant

Lambton College is joining other institutions across the province, calling on the Ontario government to increase financial support provided to low-income students.

Right now, the 30 per cent off Ontario Tuition Grant is only available to those who graduated high school in the past four years.

Lambton College President Judith Morris says it's time to expand the criteria to allow more people the chance to attend college.

"I think when ever you open a door for anyone, regardless of their income it opens up an opportunity for an education and for ultimately a job," says Morris.

"There are areas where we need employees for example in the skilled trades and the stem subjects."

Morris says over 50 per cent of college applicants in Ontario have household incomes less than $60,000.

Morris is hopeful the change will be included in the upcoming provincial budget, to be released February 25.
