Cogeco Looking To Expand Services

TV Cogeco is looking to boost its news coverage in seven small markets in Ontario, including Sarnia-Lambton.

Cogeco VP of Residential Market Johanne Hinse says they've made an application to the CRTC.

"Our plan is to focus on providing local news and information to the rural additional communities located within our cable services areas in Ontario and Quebec that do not have any local television news and information programming at the present time," says Hinse.

Hinse says a similar model, introduced in North Bay in 2002, has been very successful.

Hines says it could take six to nine months before a decision is made on the proposal.

She says it's too early to tell whether local radio stations could play a part in news coverage.

Meantime, the CRTC is holding public hearings to review the policy framework of community TV channels.
