Off Lake Flurries Give Way To Mild Weekend

Western Region OPP says they were busy Friday responding to weather-related crashes on highways 402 and 401.

At one point they had 21 incidents on the go but there were no serious injuries.

Sergeant Dave Rektor says drivers again failed to adjust to changing conditions when they encountered off lake flurries impacting north and east Lambton County and neighbouring Middlesex County.

"The common denominator in all of the collisions is speed too fast for road and weather conditions," says Rektor. "If people would just slow down, driving would be a lot safer for everyone."

Flurries generated by persistent northwest winds off the open waters of Lake Huron were expected to dissipate by Friday evening.

Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson says winds will shift southerly and temperatures will rise for the weekend.

Highs near 7 C (45 F) are forecast for Saturday and Sunday in Sarnia-Lambton, nine degrees above normal for this time of year.

"The milder than normal conditions are expected to persist into the first part of February," says Coulson. "By Thursday of next week, it looks like a return to more seasonal temperatures."

February 2015 was the coldest month ever in Sarnia-Lambton.
