A local group is hoping it can prevent the Lambton Kent District School Board from closing SCITS high school in Sarnia.
The 'Save SCITS' group is fundraising through a gofundme page to help cover printing costs of signs and brochures against the closure, expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks.
As of Friday morning, they had raised $425 of its $500 goal.
Committee Member Susan MacKenzie says there's no financial reason to close the school and other options should be considered.
"There's financial incentive given from the Ministry to focus on large schools with combined populations," says MacKenzie. "Now, I would go for Grades 7's and 8's, so you have a combined school of 7-12, and make the elementary schools in the city JK-6."
Board Superintendent of Education Gary Girardi responded to the proposal Friday afternoon. He says a proposal such as this one, considering changes to all elementary schools, would need time for the school board to do a thorough analysis of the suggestion.
Alternative proposal suggestions can be submitted online through the board website or emailed to [email protected].
The Lambton Kent District School Board announced the option to close SCITS and consolidate students at St. Clair Secondary School in late November.
The second Accomodation Review Committee meeting takes place at SCITS on March 8, ahead of the decision deadline in April.
