Sarnia's mayor wants a comprehensive study of the social and economic impact of the potential closure of SCITS high school.
Mike Bradley is asking city council to direct staff to report back at the March 21 meeting on the impact on surrounding neighbourhoods and the commercial areas of Mitton Village and the downtown.
The Lambton Kent District School Board is considering consolidating SCITS and St. Clair Secondary School on the St. Clair site.
Mayor Bradley says many area residents have expressed concerns.
"City council in the past through their official plan have expressed strong views about protecting neighbourhoods and about developing a sense of community in a collaborative community," says Sarnia's mayor. "These decisions being made by the school board in April could have a very damaging impact on certain parts of the city, whether it be in the St. Clair area or SCITS area."
An Accommodation Review Committee is currently studying the proposed consolidation, with the board expected to make a decision in April.
