A Sarnia manufacturer has developed a new civil defence munition to try to reduce the potential for injury.
Lamperd Less Lethal's new projectile has a revolutionary nylon section instead of aluminium, thanks to help from Lambton College's Bluewater Technology Access Centre.
BTAC Director Dr. Maike Luiken says staff and seven students developed prototypes and then produced a 3C printed prototype of a mold for mass production of the munition to be used in a new 40mm launcher.
"The main benefit to the college is that the students get experience and learning," says Luiken. "They work with the company, they learn how to work on the real project and they can take that on their resumes when they graduate and start working."
Dr. Luiken says three companies hope to patent prototypes of items that BTAC helped develop.
