Sarnia-Lambton's new member of parliament will have the opportunity to table a private members bill in the House of Commons next year.
Marilyn Gladu was in the first half of 338 members with number 44 in a parliamentary lottery system.
She's pleased that just a few months into her new role, she will be able to draft a bill tailored to the needs of the community.
"Well, I've had folks talking to me about the number of suicides that we have had in Sarnia-Lambton and some of the things they'd like to see change in mental health area in order to provide more assistance and more follow-up for the families," she says.
Gladu adds unions have also expressed interest in legislation regarding employment insurance.
Sarnia-Lambton's previous MP Pat Davidson was successful in getting legislation passed in 2012 to improve contact lens eye safety for Canadians.
