Sarnia police have now laid criminal charges in connection with a fatal fire and explosion at the Veolia Environmental Services plant on Scott Rd. in October 2014.
The division manager of the North America corporation, 44-year-old Anthony Lavoratore, and the company itself, each face one count of criminal negligence causing death and five counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
Both are to appear in court on January 12, 2016.
Jason Miller, 37, died and five others were seriously injured October 25, 2014, when a dust collection system outside the building exploded, damaging a section of cinder block wall and causing part of the roof to collapse.
Veolia and an on-site supervisor also faces charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and are to appear again in Provincial Offences Court January 8, 2016.
It’s alleged the company did not cease the metalizing process at the workplace after being warned of hazards by its engineers and failed to ensure the dust collector was suitable for the process.
