First Place Flyers Edge Legionnaires

The Sarnia Legionnaires fell 2-1 to the Leamington Flyers in a tightly contested game at Sarnia Arena Tuesday night in GOJHL hockey action.

Scott Emerson opened the scoring for the Flyers with a powerplay goal five minutes into the opening frame.

Sarnia tied the game with three minutes left in the first as Konnor Roskovich sprung Ryan Vendramin on a breakaway. For Vendramin, it was his ninth goal of the season in 13 games played.

Mitchell Amante put the Flyers ahead for good, with the winning goal at 4:46 of the second period.

Legionnaires Head Coach Mark Davis says his team played a solid defensive game.

Sarnia went scoreless on four powerplay chances while the Flyers capitalized on one of six opportunities.

Aidan Hughes had a strong game in the Legionnaires crease, stopping 30 of 32 shots. Tyler Wall turned aside 20 shots in the Leamington goal.

The Legionnaires are now 11-9-1-2 on the season, sixth place in the Western Conference and 14 back of Leamington (19-4-1-0) for top spot.

Sarnia's next game is Thursday night at home to the St. Thomas Stars.
