Sarnia's mayor is surprised city staff are standing their ground in a review of regulations governing churches, soup kitchens and food banks.
Mike Bradley says council had tabled a rezoning report at its October 26 meeting for additional information on the 2001 bylaw.
He says it's deja vu seeing the same recommendations before them a second time.
"We tabled it simply to have the language back in front of us to do that, going back to what we used to do, back before 2002-2003. But staff had come back and recommended that we not do that, that we continue the direction that they were recommending," says Bradley. "My sense is that it's the wrong direction."
The rezoning application before city council Monday redetermines definitions and changes zoning on the use of buildings as well as parking.
Bradley says the recommended changes are an intrusion into the affairs of a church and could expose the city to a Charter of Rights challenge.
