Civil Marriages Now Offered At City Hall

Sarnia City Council has passed a by-law allowing the City Clerks Department to provide civil marriage services to the community.

City staff say it will cost $250 and take about two hours for the initial meeting and wedding ceremony. Weddings would be performed one day a month in the council chambers.

City Clerk Nancy Wright-Laking says only Judges, Justices of the Peace, and City Clerks are allowed to solemnize civil marriages.

City staff say there's public demand for the services.

Civil ceremonies differ from religious ceremonies in that religious connotations, such as to God or a Supreme Being are not made.
